Dr. Zhaoyun Zeng is currently an Assistant Professor in :office: the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and :office: the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City at the University of Macau. His research focuses on assessing the impacts of climate change on cities and developing urban adaptation strategies that leverage resilience design and renewable energy. He is among the earliest advocates in the U.S. for incorporating future weather data into building design and code-compliance analyses.

Dr. Zeng received his Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology advised by Prof. Godfried Augenbroe. Prior to joining the University of Macau, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and as a building scientist at Argonne National Laboratory.

Ph.D. positions

  • Prospective Ph.D. applicants should hold a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Atmospheric Science, or Industrial Engineering from a leading university (a 211 Project university is required for Mainland China graduates).
  • English proficiency requirements: TOEFL ≥ 80 or IELTS ≥ 6.0 or CET-6 ≥ 430.
  • Preferred knowledge and skills: heat transfer, fluid mechanics, numerical analysis, Python/ Matlab, building energy modeling, optimization, machine learning, and climate modeling.
  • Admitted Ph.D. students are guaranteed a monthly Teaching and Research Assistantship stipend of :moneybag: MOP12,500 (USD1,550), which can be increased to :moneybag: MOP14,000 (USD1,736) in subsequent years. Top-ranked applicants may be awarded a scholarship of :moneybag: MOP20,000 (USD2,480) per month.
  • Ph.D. students will have extensive opportunities for research visits and postdoctoral positions in the U.S., Canada, Sweden, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia through Dr. Zeng’s professional network.

    Post-doctoral fellow positions

  • Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree from a top-ranked university.
  • The contract term is 2 years.
  • A taxable annual remuneration from :moneybag: MOP336,000 (approximately USD41,480) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions experience.
